[ good monday morning! today firefly can find taair by the beach - he's standing on the sand, his fancy boy boots and socks neatly set to the side, and he looks fascinated. ]
if you look up in the library, among the shelves, what do you see? books. books, on books, on books, a person, books - well, wait, one of those things doesn't fit in here.
that person would be taair, sporting a pair of fluffy blue wings at his back that are currently spread out wide as he precariously balances one foot on one shelf, and another on the one below, as if in mid climb. he is nearly within arms reach of the top shelf, but as he stretches up... the shelf wobbles.
it is around the time as firefly comes by that taair's foot slips - he makes a startled noise, and though he grabs onto the shelf to keep from toppling over with it, the book he was very carefully trying not to knock over does slide free of its place and begin falling down. ]
[ they are yes but not generally on top of the shelf!!
anyway. thankfully, firefly is cool and dodges the book, and taair sighs in relief. ]
Oh, thank goodness - good day, Miss Samuel! I'm so sorry - and, thank you, but I think I'm alright! I just, ah, lost my footing... and I've almost got the book I want...
[ the book that fell to the floor is the prince by niccolo macchiavelli
he returns reaching up for the book he's trying to grab. ]
It's called Two Treatises on Government, by an author named John Locke! I've never heard of it, but apparently it makes a wonderful argument for equality within government and society, and compares it to a more standard monarchy, so I thought I must read it for my research. And I've almost... got it....
[ two more inches... and then... aha! he pulls the book free.
the shelf wobbles but he does not fall. thank god. ]
[She's never encountered this book before, but theres plenty of information she just hasn't come across.
Firefly watches the bookshelf just to make sure it doesn't topple over while somebody is on top of it. When it stays up, she sighs a little in relief.]
That book is new to me too.
But... Standard monarchy? Most of the planets I've seen aren't rules by just one family.
[ HE KNOWS WHAT A PLANET IS NOW he has learned things ]
Ah! Less of a planet and more of a nation-state. The continent that I live in, Rodinia, is comprised of several nation-states, and each of those has their own unique system of government. In Iria, the standard has been a monarchy for some time now - hundreds of years - but it wasn't always that way. By contrast, their neighbor, the Papal States, is ruled by the Hierophant, the head of the Light of Sanctuary, making the nation a theocracy.
[ cheerfully telling this from several feet in the air. ]
Really, I suppose autocracy is the better word... solitary rulers are mostly the norm, but Iria is the last state remaining with a true "monarchy". However, the majority of the nation-states, from the Hashah of Elaman to the Knight Kings of the Union, feature succession by bloodline. Does that make sense?
[ There are so many different ways of ruling a nation or an empire. She's so glad she's not in politics herself, she doesn't think she could do any of this sort of thing. ]
It does.
Most places I know about are ruled by counsels comprising of several members. I'm not sure most people would trust in just one ruler.
week 0, monday!
So that's what it feels like...

Is this the first time you've been on a beach?

[ yes. yes, taair, yes it is. he wiggles his toes a little in the sand, looking down and then back at her with a smile. ]

She quickly dodges out of the way, doing a little roll so the book topples into empty space instead of on her. ]
Do you need help?

W2: Monday
Appearance wise, she's wearing something far out of her norm. ]
Do you eat these?
no subject
taair is normal! he is inspecting the garden too - his chao makes a happy noise and skitters over to come say hello, friendly. ]
Vegetables? [ a blink. ] Yes, I do - I think most people do, unless they are picky... Why do you ask, Miss Samuel?
no subject
She supposes she's Samuel, but she wonders how she got that name. ]
I was wondering if these little ones could also eat them.
