[ if he were more polite, fidelio would knock on the doorframe or at least say something from the doorway before entering, but he isn't, and he doesn't. ]
[ honestly the lack of politeness is so refreshing its so nice.
he smiles, soft - it's sad, certainly tired, but a taair smile nonetheless. ]
If I lied and said that at least I am physically well, would you believe me? [ very softly joking - he gestures to a comfy looking chair near his bed with his head. ] Come, sit for a spell.
[ he comes over and takes a seat, though the end of his tail is still visibly flicking behind him with anxiety (over too many things to count, at this point). ]
Yes. It's... a troubling escalation, and that is an understatement. And we will have to go through the short song and dance tomorrow... hopefully, with a bit more time.
They'd better give us more time if they're makin' us solve twice the murders.
[ rip ]
Ugh. Still hard to believe how easy it apparently was for the killer to get inside after the lengths we went to tryin' to get out. [ ...a pause, then he glances over at taair. ] I really didn't make your injuries worse with that?
It does make me think.. the doors must unlock, and the barriers must drop, after we all fall to slumber.
[ there's a sympathetic look to that, because Oh My God Did They Try, but the side comment, idle as it is...this concern makes the frown on his face soften, though, into a small smile. ]
You didn't - not as far as I nor Jiaoqiu's very thorough doctor's lookover could tell. [ warmly. ] And... I think, despite the worries and the outcome, it was worth trying. We all felt quite a bit of despair at the realization - it says something that your first thought was to take action.
Think I would've regretted it more if I hadn't tried, yeah.
[ even though it obviously could have gone a whole lot better. ]
But. That's good. [ ... ] You mind tellin' me what happened yesterday? Still sort of missing the context for why you showed up with all them injuries in the first place.
Ah...yes, I can tell you. Though... I will warn you, I do not know yet the "why" or the "how"... I have the same questions that many of you asked of me.
[ how did this happen, and all that jazz. ]
The strangest part of it all was that... I had no recollection of being here at all, or of my own life. I fell asleep on Wednesday evening, a bit tipsy. And when I awoke... I found myself preparing to join a group of soldiers as one of many healers in the regiment, heading to the battlefront to fight in a war, as if I had been doing so since I was small.
Yes - but... no, not really. I was still myself - Taair. I still had many adjacent experiences to ones I have had before. But... in a different setting and place.
I also was not a human, but instead a foxian. As far as I was aware, I was near a hundred years of age. [ which. you know. foxian. like the fox guy. gee i wonder. ] It's a bit strange, even now. I feel as though I have a foot in two different lives.
[ there's a rueful little laugh to that, and he nods. ]
Yes - the four of us were together, as if it was our first meeting, and bonded over the time we spent there as opposed to the time we've spent here. The only thing that truly drew us together was that...well, that we enjoy each other's company, mostly, and that we had our halos.
[ there's a little uneasiness to it, but... yeah. that sound about right. ]
It was very strange. But... at least in one case - I was glad for it, when I returned. Someone died on the battlefield, and to see them here walking and breathing... it was a relief, to say the least.

It was like that for the others too, far as you know?

[ since it helped them find each other. ]
It was just the four of us who did - no others. Not even people who we saw that we had known in heaven...

The ones without halos, they were just there as scenery, more like?

...Yeah, I can see that. Seen enough dead bodies 'round here already.
