he is in the hospital! he's sitting on a bed with an icepack on his head, dressed in comfier clothes. and when he sees laurence - of course he has a smile for him. soft, tired. ]

Hello, Laurence. [ ... ] I won't lie, I have been better - but I think I could be far worse off, too.

How are you? Would you like to come sit, for a little while?

[ but he nods anyway, and takes a seat near the bed. ]

I thought it'd be you, after yesterday.

I'm getting the sense that many people did.

[ there's a rueful smile, and he folds his hands in his lap. ]

Myself included.... I started to prepare myself for it, at least mentally, last night.

After how you talked to her during trial, it was a little obvious.

[ given how the other executions have been close... it made sense. ]

You shouldn't have had to. This whole thing... it's wrong.

She was very dear to me. As close as a sibling.

And... thank you, Laurence. I agree. But... at least it gave me a chance to tell her goodbye. That is more than many are offered - and... I came away from it mostly unscathed, compared to those before.

[ wild. can't relate, he only trusts a handful of people after this long and certainly doesn't think of anyone like family. maybe yves. ]

There's that. [ a goodbye and being less injured. ] I think everyone would've lost it if you were hurt more after last week.

...We still have to find a way to fix it.

Perhaps I am a special case. I don't think time necessarily impacts bonds. Not in situations like this.

[ trauma bonding! but also. well. his circumstances sort of lead to it, so he lets that aside - the first part makes him laugh a little bit, sheepishly, wincing as he does. ] And, yes... I'm sure I looked ridiculous up there, but I knew I didn't stand a chance face to face. I wanted to buy some time, and... well. Some distance.

We do. We must keep exploring and trying to find what we can of this place - as slow of a trickle of information there is, there is at least some.

If it makes you feel any better, I wasn't watching. [ one less person to see him look ridiculous or whatever. ] I get it, though. If it were me, I'd do the same thing.

It's too slow, is the problem. More people are going to die if it keeps up like that, and we hardly even know where to start.
